Smart Blonde Apparel - bringing fun and attention into the wardrobes of blondes everwhere.
Debra Carroll has introduced a new concept and design not seen before in female apparel. With her daughter sparking the creative idea, Smart Blonde™ has been thrust into the spotlight by bringing humor and fun to the dumb blonde stereotype. Here is how and why she started her company, A Smart Blonde™, in her own words:
Being a blonde my entire life I have heard all the jokes. I mean, who hasn’t? I wouldn’t say that I have ever been truly offended by these jokes, but I have always noticed the stereotype towards blondes that they invoke. Smart Blonde™ as a business idea didn’t however enter into my thought process until the day I realized that my own smart and blonde daughter Jesi, just 11 years old, was also suspect to these jokes.
I had always dreamed of becoming a successful entrepreneur and I knew that one day the right idea would just come to me. After years of working in “corporate world America” and toying with business ideas, my husband, daughter and I moved from Phoenix, AZ to the Seattle, WA area in summer of 2000. Looking towards a change in my career and my life, I applied and accepted a part-time teachers aide position in the local school district in which we now found ourselves living.
In my new position, I was working with 6th grade students. I began to take notice that so many of them were wearing school sweatshirts. These sweatshirts although very typical in style as any other, were unique in that the kids had their nicknames or cute, short sayings printed on the backs of them. It was then that I decided to purchase one for my own daughter, who didn’t yet have one.
While I anticipated Jesi would instantly come up with her own ideas for her “sweatshirt saying”, she didn’t. So we jokingly tossed out a few ideas back and forth at one another. Finally I said to her, “You know Jesi, you are such a smart blonde!”. “What do you think of putting that on the back of your sweatshirt?” She said she loved the idea and together we took great pride in our decision. It wouldn’t take very long, however, before our pride turned to utter amazement.
Upon taking the shirt in for printing, I was in disbelief when the storeowner made a comment to the effect of he had never heard of a smart blonde. I remember thinking in that instant while chuckling along with him, that this guy is clueless. I had always thought of myself as a very intelligent yet blonde woman, not to mention the fact that I was there on behalf of my very smart and blonde daughter. Although I shrugged it off, I did take note of his remark. What happened next, however, would spark the birth of Smart Blonde™.
It seemed as if everyone had a comment to make each time Jesi wore this sweatshirt. Other students, parents and teachers alike all seemed to have a comment to make. While some were as derogatory as the storeowners comment, most were very positive and began to prove very inspirational to me. This simple two word saying on the back of my daughter’s sweatshirt was beginning to generate a lot of talk and attention everywhere she went.
I knew then that we had a very unique and fun idea at our disposal. I was also well aware that smart blonde women and girls were everywhere and that many of them were probably as tired of the jokes as I now was, and/or would just like to have the opportunity to have the last laugh themselves for once.
On July 22, 2002, Smart Blonde™ was submitted for trademark rights and founded as a business. My husband, daughter and I began creating design ideas for apparel. We didn’t want just one or two designs, but instead a multitude of options without expanding too big, too fast. Smart Blonde™, boosted into reality by the launch of our website www.Asmartblonde.com on October 22, 2002, began with 10 different designs on 8 different styles of shirts in a multitude of colors for all ages.
Since our launch it has been very encouraging to receive so much feedback and orders. It is truly gratifying to hear from one blonde after another how much they love our idea for one reason or another. Some blondes are just plain tired of the jokes; others are deeply offended by them. Some blondes are hurting for their own daughters, using Smart Blonde™ to fight off the stereotype once and for all; while still others just want to wear our shirts for the fun and attention they generate.
Being committed in our new role as cheerleader for blondes worldwide, we really try to encourage feedback from customers. My goal has become to lend a voice for them one and all. I am a huge believer in that if companies would just listen to their customers, their customers would drive their businesses. Therefore, I encourage our customers to do just that with Smart Blonde™. Customers are making requests and we are listening to them.
In January 2003 we expanded our operations to incorporate the many requests from our customers. Additions include new designs, larger sizes, additional ink processes and even a unisex line for men. Yes, I have even heard from many blonde men who want in on the fun as well. We are also looking to expand into foreign markets as we have already received orders from and much interest in other nations as well. Once again, proof that smart blonde’s are everywhere.
I really do believe that a Smart Blonde™’s time has come and that her success is destined. Smart Blonde™ very simply is an answer back to the dumb blonde folly that’s been going on for so long now. Sometimes it’s just utterly amazing to me that two simple words when put together could generate such comments. Smart Blonde™ just makes a statement and I think that people can’t resist the urge to remark. But then again I ask, “who hasn’t heard all of the jokes”?
